Neurodivergent Inclusive Class FAQs
Before Class
Do I need any experience to join a pottery class?
Not at all! Unless otherwise specified, our classes are all beginner-friendly.
Can I come on my own?
Yes, many people do.
Can I bring a support worker and what is the cost?
Usually, due to space limits, support workers are required to book a paid ticket. For Quiet Clay, we are trialling a smaller class size and can offer a free ticket for a non-participating support worker (no clay or firing included).
If your support worker would like to participate in the class, please book them a paid ticket.
Can I use NDIS funding for this event?
Yes, we can invoice plan-managed NDIS providers. Please confirm with your provider that your funding covers recreational classes. We require at least two weeks’ notice to organise invoicing.
What should I bring to a class?
Wear comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little messy. Our hand building classes are generally low mess, but you can wear an apron if you like. You may find it easier to tie back long hair, trim long nails, and remove large rings. If you do not like the sensation of clay you may like to bring plastic gloves. You are very welcome to wear headphones/ earphones, fidgets, or bring a comfy pillow to sit on, a comfort toy, or anything else that makes you feel comfortable.
What will I make?
We will be providing you the instructions to make a pinch pot form which can be turned into many different things – like a coffee mug, paintbrush holder, the basis for a sculpture, a jewellery dish, a pet bowl… However – you are welcome to make whatever you like with the clay. If you are struggling for inspiration we will provide some ideas sheets, or you could look on Pinterest or social media for pottery ideas before you come.
Getting There
Where is your studio located?
Our studio is based in a residential cottage at 37 Glenholm Street, Mitchelton (North Brisbane). It is on a roundabout and there is a white picket fence around it. Look for our sign on the corner, and enter through the pedestrian gate.
What if I can’t find it?
Don’t worry. Just call or text the Studio Manager Ash – 0408 836 634.
Is parking available?
Yes, we have plenty of street parking available on Glenholm Street and Grovely Terrace. We are also 300m from Mitchelton Train Station and the Blackwood Street bus stops.
What time should I arrive?
If you arrive early there are chairs on the porch and front yard where you can wait. We will open the doors at least ten minutes before the class begins. If something happens that makes you late you can easily slip in and catch up via the printed instruction sheets.

Is your studio accessible for people with mobility aids?
Somewhat. A concrete path leads from the pedestrian gate to the front porch where there are four steps and a hand rail to enter. Once inside there is space for a walker or wheelchair to access the studio. There is a small step up into the bathroom but plenty of space inside the room. If you have specific needs, please reach out, and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
During Class

What happens when I arrive?
A teacher may greet you with a smile/ wave or say hello. Please don’t feel you need to interact if that is not comfortable for you. Find a place to sit at the big table. You can hang your bag over your chair, or leave it out of the way on the pottery wheel tables at the back of the room. If you’re early, feel free to look at the ideas sheets or scroll on your phone etc.
How does clay feel and what if I don't like the sensation?
Clay is cool, slightly wet, and smooth with a fine grit. It can feel slippery when very wet and dry or tight on the skin as it dries. You are welcome to bring along some plastic gloves if you think you may not enjoy the feeling of clay. We will also have a bucket of water by the tables where you can rinse and dry your hands as often as you like. We also have a bathroom with soap and hand cream available.
I am non-verbal, how will this class work for me?
If you are non-verbal or prefer not to engage verbally, please indicate this in your booking form. On the day, you may choose to wear a red sticker available on the table to signal that you prefer minimal or no conversation. This is optional.

Will we have to introduce ourselves or share our work?
No. There are no group introductions or sharing rounds in Quiet Clay. Participation is self-directed. If you would like feedback or assistance, you can request it.
How do I ask for help during class?
A teacher will be present throughout the session. You can approach a teacher directly, or raise your hand. If you prefer not to be approached unless you ask, you may indicate this at booking or on arrival or wear a red sticker available on the day.
I’ve never done this before, what if I’m bad at it?
We teach beginners every week. There is no expectation to be artistic or produce a specific outcome. The aim of this class is to experience the creative process, not the outcome.
What if I need a break during class?
Please feel free to leave the classroom for a stretch or break any time. The front porch and garden are available for you to move around. You may also like to go to the kitchen and make yourself a cup of tea. If you need to leave early, that’s fine. You are free to step outside or take a break at any time.

What is the sensory environment like?
The studio is a small cottage space with natural light no warm indoor lighting. There is no background music during Quiet Clay. The space may smell lightly of clay. There is no artificial fragrance used in the studio. We use an airconditioner if the temperature is uncomfortable. If you have specific sensory concerns, please contact us before class.
Are there rules I need to know about pottery?
Yes there are some basic rules:
-
Always scratch a name/ initial into your piece so you can identify it after firing.
-
Scratch and Slip - If you join two pieces of clay you must scratch the surface of each piece, add “slip” (water is fine), and press/ wiggle the clay til firmly joined.
-
If you make anything thicker than 2cm, please hollow it out so it dries thoroughly.

Will photos be taken?
We will not take photos during these classes.
After Class
When can I take home my pottery?
Your pots must be fully air dried, bisque fired, glazed and glaze fired. This process takes around 4 weeks. We will email you for collection.
Where do I collect the pieces from?
There is an area on our front porch with a timber cupboard and bench – your pots will be left here for collection at a time that suits you.
